Hackney Wick,
one of the most famous playing fields for Sunday League Football
in London, where I often played from an early age.
Over the years I noticed that each referee had a very different
character and a unique way of handling the game. Whether it
was how young or old they were; how thin or over weight, or
simply just how traditional and seriously they took the game
caught my eye.
This observation drove my interest in documenting the referees
as part of an ongoing project.
These portraits were taken at Hackney Wick, the project will
eventually take me to football grounds all over London.
